During the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation conference in San Francisco, President Joe Biden made a lighthearted remark regarding California Gov. Gavin Newsom (D)’s potential ambitions for the presidency.
At a reception for APEC leaders, Biden expressed gratitude to Newsom for his performance as governor and jokingly suggested that Newsom could pursue any position, even the one Biden currently holds.
Biden said that the governor has the potential to excel in any role, including that of president.
Despite publicly supporting Biden for reelection in 2024, Newsom has faced allegations of engaging in a covert campaign for the presidency. These accusations stem from his attention-grabbing domestic travels and notable international trips, such as his recent visit to China.

At the major global summit, Newsom took on a prominent role by welcoming Chinese President Xi Jinping at the airport and organizing a lucrative fundraiser for Biden on Tuesday.
In his speech, Biden also spoke about Vice President Kamala Harris, who, like Newsom, hails from the San Francisco Bay Area. While Newsom previously held the position of San Francisco mayor, Harris served as the city’s district attorney prior to becoming the attorney general of California.
“I’m particularly grateful for the Bay Area for giving our great vice president the chance to become vice president,” the president said.
