CLEVELAND, OHIO - SEPTEMBER 29: U.S. President Donald Trump and Democratic presidential nominee Joe Biden participate in the first presidential debate moderated by Fox News anchor Chris Wallace (C) at the Health Education Campus of Case Western Reserve University on September 29, 2020 in Cleveland, Ohio. This is the first of three planned debates between the two candidates in the lead up to the election on November 3.
President Donald Trump could not stop interrupting former Vice President and Democratic candidate Joe Biden during Tuesday night’s debate. Moderator Chris Wallace struggled to keep Trump’s interruptions under control, leaving Biden to fight back on his own, abandoning the debate topics altogether.
The segment on health care was arguably the most disastrous. Biden stated he was not in favor of Bernie Sanders‘ Medicare For All plan, and Trump interjected that Biden had “just lost the left” by doing so. Trump continued to interrupt, resulting in an exasperated Biden gesturing with his hands and asking the audience, “Folks, do you have any idea what this clown’s doing?”
The interruptions continued as the segment on health care did. Biden at one point turned to the president and asked, “Will you shut up, man?”
After Wallace ended the discussion on health care, Biden rhetorically said to Wallace, “That was a really productive segment, wasn’t it?” He then looked at Trump and said, “Keep yapping, man.” Health care was only the first segment of the debate.
