Scientific advisers to President Joe Biden are calling for a new Bill Of Rights for Artificial Intelligence technology.
Biden’s Chief science adviser Eric Lander and Deputy Director for Science and Society Alondra Nelson wrote an opinion piece for Wired expressing the need to develop new safeguards against harmful uses of A.I. that could be used to discriminate against people or violate individual’s privacy. “The possibilities include the federal government refusing to buy software or technology products that fail to respect these rights,” Lander and Nelson wrote.
The software trade association BSA, which is backed by companies like Microsoft and IBM, said it welcomed the White House’s attention to combating A.I. bias but noted that it is pushing for companies to do their own assessments of A.I. risks.
