Abbott beat fellow Republicans, reaching over the 50% mark needed to avoid a runoff. Prior to seeking his third term in office, he secured the endorsement of former President Donald Trump.
In his speech at a Corpus Christi rally, Abbott provided his reasons for running for re-election – ensuring law enforcement isn’t “defunded,” securing the Mexico border and protecting high-paying energy jobs. Abbott said these policies will “keep Texas on the right course and exceptional.”

According to his campaign, O’Rourke has raised $7.2 million in over 46 days. This fundraising haul sets a record for a Democratic candidate in Texas.
Abbotts’ campaign raised $19 million in the last six months of 2021. Now his campaign has accumulated $65 million from over 159,000 contributions in December.
“Greg Abbott has brought us to such a small place,” O’ Rourke said when asked why he’s running for governor.
Texas hasn’t elected a Democratic governor in more than three decades, so O’Rourke’s left-leaning positions on race relations, gun control and marijuana legalization may cause him problems in the general election. After winning the Democratic primary, O’Rourke said he wants to expand Medicaid, improve the public school system and raise the minimum wage for Texans.
