Bernie Sanders Slams President In DNC Speech: ‘Nero Fiddled While Rome Burned. Trump Golfs!’

Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vermont) spoke at Democratic National Convention’s first virtual night on Monday evening, making a strong speech against President Donald Trump and urging Americans to vote for his former competitor in the elections, presumptive Democratic nominee Joe Biden.

“Nero fiddled while Rome burned,” Sanders said. “Trump golfs.”

During his prime time speech, Sanders, the two-time presidential candidate, made harsh arguments against the current president, condemning him for his response to the coronavirus pandemic and criticizing him for economic failures in the country. He called the current state of the country “the worst public health crisis in 100 years and the worst economic collapse since the Great Depression.” He blasted Trump as “not only incapable of addressing these crises but is leading us down the path of authoritarianism.”

“My friends, I say to you, to everyone who supported other candidates in this primary, and to those who may have voted for Donald Trump in the last election: The future of our democracy is at stake. The future of our economy is at stake. The future of our planet is at stake,” said Sanders.

Even though Sanders previously criticized Biden for his votes for free trade deals like the North American Free Trade Agreement and to authorize the 2003 Iraq War, when he dropped out the race Sanders endorsed Biden as the right candidate against Trump.

On Monday, Sanders again encouraged Americans to vote for Biden in fall.

We must come together, defeat Donald Trump and elect Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as our next president and vice president,” he added. “My friends, the price of failure is just too great to imagine.”
