Anthony Weiner Reports To Prison For 21-Month Sexting Sentence

Anthony Weiner has reported to prison to carry out his sentence for sexting with a 15-year-old girl.

ANTHONY WEINER REPORTS TO PRISON

Weiner was sentenced to 21 months in prison for the crime in September, and is being held at the Federal Medical Center Devens in Massachusetts. The facility, which stands about 40 miles outside of Boston, holds around 1,000 inmates and 100 more at an adjacent minimum security camp. Boston Bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev was held there for a time, however, according to the Department of Justice, sex offenders made up about 40% of all inmates at Devens.

Devens offers treatments for sex offenders, described as a “voluntary, intensive, residential therapeutic program for higher risk male sex offenders.” It is unknown at this time if Weiner will participate in the program, though his attorney, Arlo Devlin-Brown, argued in September that Weiner had been attending a treatment facility every day for the past year.

At the time of his sentencing, Weiner admitted he had been “a very sick man for a very long time… My crime was my rock bottom,” Weiner added. “I am an addict. I take complete total responsibility. I was the adult.” The politician has been surrounded and hurt by his sexual crimes for years, having resigned from the House of Representatives in 2011 and lost his 2013 bid for New York mayor.

In May, the 53-year-old pleaded guilty to one count of transferring obscene material to a minor. At his sentencing, Judge Denise Cote added that during the time Weiner was communicating with the 15-year-old, he was also “in contact with 19 other women.”

In addition, Cote said that, “Because of the defendant’s notoriety, there is intense interest in the defendant’s plea and sentence. It could make a difference in lives and is a very significant part of this sentence. This is a serious crime that deserves serious punishment.”

Last year, a probe into Weiner’s sexting case brought ruin to Hillary Clinton‘s 2016 presidential campaign, when it was discovered that she was using a personal email server when the FBI was looking on Weiner’s computer. Weiner’s wife at the time, Huma Abedin, was Clinton’s closest aid, and conversations between the two were found on Weiner’s computer, which led then-FBI director James Comey to investigate Clinton.

Currently, Abedin and Weiner are in divorce proceedings.
