Former 2020 Democratic candidate and entrepreneur Andrew Yang endorsed former Vice President Joe Biden on Thursday night and called for party unity ahead of the general election.
Yang made his endorsement on live television as Biden won more contests on Tuesday night. “I believe that Joe Biden will be the Democratic nominee, and I’ve always said I’m going to support whoever the nominee is. So I hereby am endorsing Joe Biden to be not just the nominee for the Democratic Party, but the next president of the United States,” he declared.
In 2016, Yang endorsed Sen. Bernie Sanders (D-Vermont). He called the self-described democratic socialist “an inspiration,” but added that it was clear Biden had the greater delegate count and therefore the best chance to gain the nomination.
“We need to bring the party together. We need to start working on defeating Donald Trump in the fall,” Yang said.

He then took to Twitter to restate his endorsement. “Since I started running, I always said I would support the Democratic nominee. The math is clear -Joe Biden will be the nominee and I am glad to endorse him for President. Joe knows how serious the fourth industrial revolution is. He and I have spoken about it at length.”
Yang announced he would suspend his campaign last month. When asked about his campaign before the Iowa caucus, Yang told Bloomberg News that his supporters “have a lot of overlap” with Sanders’ supporters. He also said he initially declined endorsing Biden because he, “has such admiration and respect for Bernie.”

“I think Bernie has called out the real problems in a very powerful and necessary way,” Yang said. “So, I wanted to let the Democratic process play out and I believe it has. At this point, you can see very clearly that Biden is building a delegate lead that is only going to grow in the days ahead.”
