A week following the phone call between President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin, tension has begun to escalate between the two.
In Trump’s second term in office, he was initially more sympathetic toward Putin while falsely accusing Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky of starting the war.
On Sunday, Trump seems to have gone back to Ukraine. Speaking to reporters, Trump has stated that Putin is acting “crazy” and claimed that something had “changed” in the Russian leader.
Trump stated that he had a great relationship with Putin previously, and Russia’s downfall would be a result if Putin continued to engage in war against Ukraine.

The Kremlin acknowledged Trump, thanking him for monitoring their negotiation process while stating that his criticisms seem to be “emotional.”
Over the weekend, Russia launched one of its deadliest attacks against Ukraine. A drone and missile attack targeted 30 cities, resulting in at least 12 deaths.
The attack was on the same day that the two countries conducted their largest prisoner swap. One thousand prisoners were swapped. However, the negotiations between the countries failed to reach a ceasefire that Ukraine had been seeking. Instead, the Russian side launched its even heavier attacks against Ukraine.
When the prisoner exchange was first established, Trump was quick to congratulate the two sides on the negotiation. The exchange became the first result of the talks between the two countries in which the U.S. had played a part.
Despite Trump’s repeated promises to mediate and end the war between the two countries, no deal has been reached yet. While Putin has been the target of Trump’s recent attacks, Trump has also singled out Zelensky for criticism.
