After DOGE Backlash, Elon Musk Plans To Scale Back Political Donations: ‘I’ve Done Enough’

Elon Musk, the wealthiest person in the world and a key financial supporter of President Donald Trump, is planning to reduce his political activity and spending.

After significantly backing Republican campaign efforts throughout the 2024 election cycle and assuming a leadership role in the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) initiative, Musk said he will devote less time to political matters.

In a video appearance at the Qatar Economic Forum, Musk revealed his plans.

“In terms of political spending, I’m going to do a lot less in the future,” said Musk. “I think I’ve done enough.”

Musk’s announcement also comes at a time when his special government status leading DOGE approaches its 130-day limit, with May 30 marking the official end.

After months of dedicating significant time to government matters, Musk has faced immense pressure to focus more on his companies. Within the past few months, his companies have suffered substantial blows. Tesla recently saw their quarterly earnings drop by 71%, indicative of Musk’s decreased involvement in its operations and consumer blowback to his right-wing politics.

In a letter to Tesla Chair Robyn Denholm, a group of eight state treasurers expressed concerns over the company’s recent struggles amidst Musk’s dwindling involvement with Tesla.

“These external commitments raise serious questions about whether Tesla’s leadership is fully engaged in addressing the company’s core challenges,” the letter said.

Musk’s steady withdrawal from the political sphere could have ramifications for the GOP’s fundraising efforts. After spending over $250 million through the America PAC to support President Trump, Republicans face a level of uncertainty as their biggest donor looks to curtail his financial commitments.

Musk’s political influence has also taken a hit recently. After committing millions of dollars to support the conservative candidate in Wisconsin’s state Supreme Court election in April, the liberal nominee won the race. Democrats are viewing Musk as a potential liability for Republicans ahead of the 2026 midterm elections.

Many Republicans believe Musk’s lower profile could be beneficial to them, as it removes the spotlight surrounding DOGE and the Trump administration.

Musk’s departure from politics won’t be a permanent move, as many believe he’ll remain a prominent voice in Washington so long as Trump remains in office.
