Former President Donald Trump has picked up another endorsement from a former opponent.
Rep. Nancy Mace (R-South Carolina) has become the fifth of six Republican U.S. House members from South Carolina to endorse Trump. The sixth, Rep. Ralph Norman, is backing former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley.
Mace, who has found herself at odds with the former president throughout the years said in her endorsement, “I don’t see eye to eye perfectly with any candidate. And until now I’ve stayed out of it. But the time has come to unite behind our nominee.”
After the January 6, 2021, Capitol riots, Mace was one of the few Republicans calling for Trump to be held accountable for his role. After the attack, Mace was quick to get on television and declare that “Trump’s entire legacy was wiped out yesterday. We’ve got to start over.”

While Mace did vote not to impeach the former president, citing a lack of due process, she did say during her speech on the House floor that she “holds the president accountable.”
In a recent report by The Washington Post, it is alleged that during the riot, “Mace was so angry at Trump . . . that she discussed with aides the prospect of confronting the rioters so she could get punched, and become the face of anti-Trump Republicans.”
In the weeks following the attack on the Capitol, Mace went on a media blitz, crying out for Republicans to “rebuild the party.”
Trump did not take kindly to the representative’s attack on himself and his legacy, and put his support behind her competitor, Katie Arrington, in the 2022 primary. One of the many Trump-endorsed candidates who lost their race that year. In a statement, Trump called Mace “an absolutely terrible candidate who has been disloyal to Republicans.”
Mace came back around to the former president’s side when he was indicted by the Justice Department for mishandling classified documents, calling the investigation “weaponizing the executive branch to take out your political enemies.” She has now stated that she is “willing to bury the hatchet to save our country.”
Mace recently experienced a 100% turnover of her staff, with former aides calling her “delusional.”
