Acting Navy Secretary Thomas Modly’s Trip To Guam Cost Taxpayers Almost $250,000 & Cost Him His Job

Former acting U.S. Navy Secretary Thomas Modly‘s visit to Guam where he insulted the commander of the nuclear aircraft carrier USS Roosevelt cost taxpayers around $250,000, officials said Wednesday.

Modly resigned Tuesday after criticism over the decision to remove Capt. Brett Crozier, who asked for help to control a coronavirus outbreak onboard his ship.

Modly resigned after congressmen, Pentagon officials and crew members questioned his decision –– President Donald Trump also suggested Monday that he might intervene.

Modly flew for about 35-hours on a C-37B, the military variant of a Gulfstream jet,  to Guam where the USS Roosevelt was at port. The trip cost $243,116.65, about  $6,946.19 per hour.

Crozier pled for additional measures to protect his sailors from a mushrooming coronavirus breakout in a four-page memo that leaked to the public.

When Modly fired Crozier over the leak, sailors on the Roosevelt gave their captain a heartfelt send-off, which was captured on video.

“Capt. Crozier, Capt. Crozier, Capt. Crozier,” the sailors chanted in support.

When Modly visited the ship after Crozier’s firing, he slammed the captain as too “stupid” or “naive” to be in command.

Two hundred eight-six onboard crew members have tested positive for the coronavirus –– and Navy health officials expect that number to spike.
