6 Capitol Police Officers Face Disciplinary Action For Misconduct During Jan. 6 Attack

The U.S. Capitol Police (USCP) on Saturday announced that six of its officers were being suspended with pay for their misconduct during the January 6 riot that an internal investigation found.

In a statement, the department’s office of professional responsibility said it has conducted 38 internal investigations related to the misconduct during the riot. The probe found six confirmed cases that violated the department’s regulations and policies and were recommended for disciplinary measures.

“The six sustained cases should not diminish the heroic efforts of the United States Capitol Police officers,” the statement read. “On January 6, the bravery and courage exhibited by the vast majority of our employees was inspiring.”

The department did not name the six officers as “internal investigations, including any recommended disciplinary actions, as well as personnel matters are not public information,” the department said.

A few days after the riot, two Capitol officers were reportedly suspended following their misconduct on January 6. One of the officers took a selfie with rioters, according to Rep. Tim Ryan (D-Ohio).

Since the January 6 riot, a deadly event that killed civilians and officers, the USCP has conducted dozens of internal probes.

In August, Capitol Police officially cleared an officer who fatally shot Ashli Babbitt during the Capitol riot.

Weeks after, Lt. Michael Byrd, a Capitol Police officer, told NBC News that he was the officer who shot Babbitt on January 6. Since his interview, Byrd has suffered from death threats from the right-wing extremists.

More than 570 Trump supporters have been charged for participating in the deadly riot that killed dozens.

Brian Sicknick, a Capitol officer on duty during the riot, died after being hit with a fire extinguisher while trying to contain the rioters. Four Capitol officers have suicide following the event.
