WASHINGTON, DC - AUGUST 15: Demonstrators gather outside of the condo of President Donald Trump donor and current U.S. Postmaster General Louis Dejoy on August 15, 2020 in Washington, DC. The protests are in response to a recent statement by President Trump to withhold USPS funding that would ensure that the post office would be unable handle mail-in voting ballots for the upcoming 2020 Election.
Two members of House Judiciary Committee requested the FBI director to start a criminal investigation into Postmaster General Louis DeJoy in connection to changes he made in the USPS service, resulting in mail delays, ahead of November elections.
In the letter, Reps. Hakeem Jeffries (D-New York) and Ted Lieu (D-California), wrote that “There is overwhelming evidence that Postmaster General DeJoy and the Board of Governors have hindered the passage of mail.”
“Multiple media investigations show that Postmaster DeJoy and the Board of Governors have retarded the passage of mail,” they wrote. “If their intent in doing so was to affect mail-in balloting or was motivated by personal financial reasons, then they likely committed crimes.”
“At least 19 mail sorting machines, which can process 35,000 pieces of mail per hour, have been dismantled and over 671 are slated for reductions later this year,” they added.

In the letter, Jeffries and Lieu also accuse President Donald Trump of trying to interfere in the mail-in voting through DeJoy, who is his donor and appointee to this role.
“It is not unreasonable to conclude that Postmaster General DeJoy and the Board of Governors may be executing Donald Trump’s desire to affect mail-in balloting,” the representatives wrote.
Trump has repeatedly made claims, without evidence, that mail-in voting would result in fraud. In his Monday interview with Fox & Friends, Trump continued the same rhetoric, calling universal mail-in voting “the greatest scam of all time.”
“I have to tell you, that if you go with this universal mail-in … tens of millions of ballots being sent to everybody and their dogs, dogs are getting them okay, people that have been dead for 25 years are getting them, you have to see what’s happening. Then you’re never going to have a fair election,” Trump said.
Trump said changes that DeJoy implemented were intended to fix what he called decades of mismanagement at the Postal Service.
