Sen. Tim Scott (R-South Carolina) appeared on the daytime talk show The View on Monday. The presidential hopeful faced tough questions from the co-hosts and defended his stance on systematic racism and the Republican Party.
Scott, the lone black Republican senator who announced his presidential campaign two weeks ago, responded to cohost Joy Behar‘s recent comments about him. (She did not appear on Monday’s episode.) Behar had compared Scott to Clarence Thomas, suggesting that the two lack an understanding of systematic racism. Such an understanding, cohost Sunny Hostin suggested, means the success of a black American is an “exception, not the rule. She cited herself, Scott, and cohost Whoopi Goldberg as examples of exceptions.
“That is a dangerous, offensive, disgusting message to send,” Scott said.
Scott and Hostin continued their heated discussion during the commercial break. “Hi, hi! We’re back,” Goldberg exclaimed to Scott and Hostin. “Oh, we’re arguing over here still. I apologize,” Scott laughed.

The hosts and Scott maintained a respectful attitude even in heated moments, but the crowd booed when Scott defended Gov. Ron DeSantis’ (R) battle with Disney. Supporting limitations on LGBT topics in the classroom, Scott said DeSantis’ stance is the “right issue for our young children” who face being “indoctrinated.” The crowd booed the senator.
Goldberg, the moderator of the daytime talk show, scolded the crowd. “Do not boo,” she said before apologizing to Scott.
Throughout the interview, Scott used similar material from his campaign announcement and recalled moments from his poor upbringing to spread a message of hope.
