Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY14)
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi met with Representative Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez on Friday in an apparent move to heal a schism which has grown between the two.
After the meeting, Pelosi stated that Ocasio-Cortez was “gracious” but that dispelled notions that the two were in conflict. “I don’t think there ever was any hatchet. We’re in a political arena,” Pelosi said. “In a family you have your differences but you’re still a family.”
The alleged feud which grew between the two arose earlier this month when Pelosi spoke dismissively of ‘the Squad,’ a group of four progressive congresswomen of color which includes Ocasio Cortez.
Speaking to the New York Times, Pelosi stated; “All these people have their public whatever and their Twitter world, but they didn’t have any following. They’re four people, and that’s how many votes they got.”

Ocasio-Cortez quietly evaded reporters after the conclusion of the 30-minute closed-door meeting, but later expressed similar sentiments, and that she was “looking forward to continuing our work.” “I think the speaker respects the fact that we’re coming together as a party and a community,” she continued.
Democrats in the House have been divided in recent months, especially the younger more progressive wing of the party and the ‘old guard’ representatives, like Pelosi. Issues such as possible impeachment proceedings have, at times, inflamed these tensions. However, Trump’s racially tinged Twitter posts calling for members of ‘the Squad,’ including AOC, to “go home” have helped to unify the party.
“I give the credit to Donald Trump,” Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) said on Thursday. “No one was capable of unifying our party more than the president.”
