Pope Leo Bashed JD Vance & Trump Administration’s Policy On Migrants Just Months Ago

On May 8, Robert Prevost was elected Pope Leo XIV. He is the first American to occupy the role. The new pope has not shied away from expressing his opinions on American politics on his X account.

In February, he shared his criticism of Vice President JD Vance by reposting an article from the National Catholic Reporter saying, “JD Vance is wrong: Jesus doesn’t ask us to rank our love for others.” The original controversy stemmed from Vance’s statement in a Fox News interview that “there is a Christian concept that you love your family and then you love your neighbor, and then you love your community, and then you love your fellow citizens, and then after that, prioritize the rest of the world.”

As recently as April, Pope Leo reposted writer Rocco Palmo’s statement on the deportation of US resident Kilmar Abrego Garcia. “Do you not see the suffering?” Palmo wrote, quoting Auxiliary Bishop Evelio Menjivar. “Is your conscience not disturbed? How can you stay quiet?”

Pope Leo also affirmed his support of the Dreamers program by reposting a comment made on President Donald Trump’s immigration policies: “I stand with the #Dreamers and all people who are working toward an immigration system that is fair, just, and moral.” In 2020, he used his X account to uphold the Church’s stance on the death of George Floyd, calling upon the Holy Spirit to “unite [us] and heal [our] wounds.”

Additionally, the new pope has demonstrated his unwavering opposition to Trump’s family separation policy. Retweeting Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, he said, “There is nothing remotely Christian, American, or morally defensible about a policy that takes children away from their parents and warehouses them in cages.”

It is expected that Pope Leo will follow in the footsteps of his predecessor Pope Francis, vocalizing his views on numerous social issues.
