Trucker convoys along the U.S.-Canada border protesting the Covid-19 vaccine mandate have caused economic disruptions this month, but now an organizer has announced that his convoy plans to shut down the Capital Beltway near Washington D.C. this week.

“We will be along the Beltway where the Beltway will be shut down,” Bob Bolus said in an interview Sunday. “I’ll give you an analogy of that of a giant boa constrictor. It basically squeezes you, chokes you and it swallows you, and that’s what we’re going to do to D.C.”

Bolus was questioned about inconveniencing D.C. residents and potentially blocking roads that emergency vehicles would need to use.

“There will be a lane open for emergency vehicles, they’ll be able to get in and out and all that,” Bolus replied. “We will not compromise anybody’s safety or health, one way or the other. As far as if they can’t get to work, geez that’s too bad.”

He said that he does not expect to be arrested.

While the Canadian trucker convoys were protesting the rule that said they had to be vaccinated to cross the U.S.-Canada border, Bolus said that for him, that’s just one of the many things he feels is necessary to protest. He is also protesting fuel prices, school vaccine requirements and immigration.

D.C. police are preparing for the disruptions.

“I think we need to be very candid with the public about some of the expectations based upon what we’ve seen in Ottawa,” said the city’s police chief Robert Contee on Friday.

Bolus’ convoy is not the only one planning to protest. According to Bolus, hundreds of people told him that they were interested in participating.

“Law enforcement agencies across the National Capital Region are aware of plans for a series of truck convoys arriving in Washington, D.C. around the time of the State of the Union. As with any demonstration, the USCP will facilitate lawful First Amendment activity,” said Capitol police.
