Obama Slams GOP For Blocking Election Reform
Former President Barack Obama spoke out against Senate Republicans earlier this week over their refusal to debate the Democrat’s new voting reform bill in a Senate vote last week.
The HR1 “For The People Act” proposes the promotion of automatic voter registration, banning partisan gerrymandering and increased early voting, as well as the prohibition of mail-in ballot restriction. Additionally, the bill advocates for making election day a federal holiday and requiring presidential candidates to release ten years of tax returns.
The bill currently lacks any Republican support.
During a teleconference, Obama said: “In the aftermath of the insurrection, with our democracy on the line, and many of these same Republican senators going along with the notion that somehow there were irregularities and problems with legitimacy in our most recent election, they’re suddenly afraid to even talk about these issues and figure out solutions on the floor of the Senate.”
