President Joe Biden publicly urged the federal government to buy more American-made products in an announcement on Tuesday. He signed an executive order to further incentivize buying American products by the federal government.

Biden, while still a candidate for president, advocated for a $700 billion Buy American campaign that largely matches the order he signed. By introducing new spending and buying requirements into the federal government, the Biden administration hopes to reinvigorate an American economy damaged by the COVID-19 pandemic.

The Biden Buy American order will raise the threshold of required “American Made” products the federal government must buy. Pre-existing federal law gives preference to American-made products, but manufacturing loopholes allow products not wholly made in America to be considered for federal purchase. The Biden executive order intends to increase the percentage of U.S. made components, which a product must have be considered “American Made.”

The Biden administration says that increased federal spending on American made products “can spur a revitalization of the nation’s industrial strength and create new markets for new technologies.”
