Rep. Liz Cheney, 3rd Most Powerful House Republican, Votes To Impeach Trump
Rep. Liz Cheney (R-Wyoming) released a scathing statement yesterday detailing her decision to vote to impeach President Donald Trump.
Cheney in her statement wrote, “Everything that followed was his doing,” she said about the riots in the Capitol building last Wednesday. “None of this would have happened without the president. I will vote to impeach the president.”
Cheney, daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, joined nine Republican House members who voted for impeachment. Cheney’s decision is notable because of her power in the Republican party.
Senior figures in the Republican party have been generally unwilling to make statements as definitive as Cheney’s, as she is only joined by three other GOP House representatives. Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell (R-Kentucky) has indicated his support for the president’s impeachment believing that distance from Trump will help his party in the future, but has not said if he will vote for conviction in the Senate.
