President Donald Trump is reportedly upset by a deal made by Gov. Gavin Newsom (D-California) and car manufacturers, which requires tighter control on car emission standards. The Trump administration had tried to roll back strict standards implemented by the Obama administration.

Newman said that the deal “is showing the limits of the power of this administration.”

Trump tweeted his dismay. “Henry Ford would be very disappointed if he saw his modern-day descendants wanting to build a much more expensive car, that is far less safe and doesn’t work as well, because execs don’t want to fight California regulators,” he wrote.

Adding in a second post, “California will squeeze them to a point of business ruin. Only reason California is now talking to them is because the Feds are giving a far better alternative, which is much better for consumers!”

The California governor seemed to take pleasure in responding to Trump, “NEWSFLASH: This is about an iconic American company maintaining America’s leadership in the global economy,” ending the tweet with “CA gets it. Ford gets it. Rest of the world gets it.”

California Air Resources Board Chairwomen, Mary Nichols, said that California took Washington’s place when the car manufacturers could not make a deal with the Trump administration.

Nichols added that fuel efficient cars are in a higher demand in other countries and this deal could help the companies. “As the global market becomes more important and as China increasingly adopts California standards, what we’ve done with our regulations has proven to be attractive to other jurisdictions that in the future represent a much bigger market for the companies,” she said.

The issue of car emission is one that hits close to home for California. The states has had smog shrouding its cities in past decades. In 2018, when the Trump administration lowered the standards former Gov. Jerry Brown (D-California) said it was an “assault on the health of Americans everywhere.”
