After two deadly mass shootings last weekend, President Donald Trump tweeted that Congress should link immigration reform with new gun control laws.

The two-part tweet said, “Republicans and Democrats must come together and get strong background checks, perhaps marrying…. this legislation with desperately needed immigration reform. We must have something good, if not GREAT, come out of these two tragic events!”

The president made no mention of this in his speech addressing the two massacres. He instead blamed violent video games, the internet and mental health laws for the shootings.

The El Paso shooter told investigators that his motive was to kill Mexicans.

House Judiciary Committee Chairman Jerry Nadler (D-New York) questioned the link between the two issue, asking, “what’s the connection… that we have to keep guns out of the hands out of the invading hordes?”

Rep. Jim McGovern (D-Massachusetts) tweeted, “In May, Trump said we are being “invaded” by immigrants. The El Paso shooter said he wanted to stop the “invasion.” Adding in a second tweet “Words matter. The domestic terror attack in El Paso was targeted at Hispanic Americans & inspired by racism and white supremacy of the president.”
