President Donald Trump caused a stir on Memorial Day with a tweet focusing on himself and his perceived accomplishments more than honoring fallen soldiers. Happy Memorial Day! Those who died for our great country would be very happy and proud at how well our country is doing today. Best economy in decades, lowest unemployment numbers for Blacks and Hispanics EVER (& women in 18years), rebuilding our Military and so much more. Nice! — Donald J. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) May 28, 2018 Other politicians such as former presidents Barack Obama and George W. Bush contrasted Trump’s tweet with more respectful ones of their own. A myriad of Americans responded negatively to the president’s self-congratulatory tweet, and a retired two-star Army general, Major Paul Eaton, had words for Trump as well, telling him "there is nothing 'happy' about Memorial Day." Mr. President: My father was MIA in Vietnam for 30 years. I will visit him at Arlington today. There is nothing “happy” about #MemorialDay. pic.twitter.com/QHShDLxJGK — Major General (ret) Paul Eaton (@PaulDEaton52) May 28, 2018 Eaton served in the military for 33 years and retired in 2006. He was a commander during the Iraq War.
