Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-South Carolina), Senate Judiciary Committee chairman, urged senior judges who are close to retirement to step down from their current positions.
Leaving their posts would allow President Donald Trump to appoint replacements before the upcoming election in November. Trump is currently trailing former Vice President Joe Biden by double-digits in most polls.
“This is a historic opportunity,” Graham said. “We’ve put over 200 federal judges on the bench. I think 1 in 5 federal judges are Trump appointees. … So if you’re a circuit judge in your mid-60s, late 60s, you can take senior status; now would be a good time to do that if you want to make sure the judiciary is right of center. This is a good time to do it.”
Since Trump took office, he has had over 200 judicial nominations confirmed, mostly young very conservative judges, making it the second-fastest pace of any president.
