Sen.-elect Tommy Tuberville (R-Alabama) made a few errors when answering some basic questions about the U.S. government in his first interview.
In an Alabama Daily News interview with other newly elected senators, Tuberville was asked whether the Republican party would utilize their Senate majority to pass legislation.
Tuberville responded, “I don’t care if you’re a Republican or Democrat. Our government wasn’t set up for one group to have all three branches of government —wasn’t set up that way. You know, the House, the Senate, and the executive.”
The U.S. government famously consists of the legislative, judicial and executive branches. The Senate and House of Representatives both make up the legislative branch – the Senate and House are not their own branches, as Tuberville claimed.

Tuberville also said that President-elect Joe Biden would lead a more “socialist type of government.”
Following his comment on Biden, the Tuberville added that his father fought in World War II in order to “free Europe from socialism.” However, World War II was a fight against fascism – not socialism.
