Democrats in the House of Representatives are expected to unveil a new bill this week to limit Supreme Court justice terms from a life-long appointment to just 18 years.
The new bill grants every president the right to nominate only two justices in the span of their four-year term.
Rep. Ro Khanna (D-California) commented, “It would save the country a lot of agony and help lower the temperature over fights for the court that go to the fault lines of cultural issues and is one of the primary things tearing at our social fabric.”
He will introduce the bill on Tuesday with Rep. John Kennedy III (D-Massachusetts) and Don Beyer (D-Virginia).

The bill will exempt current justices from term-limits, but those coming after will serve for 18 years and rotate to lower courts as “seniors.”
Some legal experts have commented that a constitutional amendment is required because the U.S. Constitution is interpreted in a way where life tenure is required for federal judges and justices.
Khanna responded, “That’s perfectly consistent with their judicial independence and having a lifetime salary and a lifetime appointment.”
